In 1984, a series of break-ins and extremely violent sex attacks occurred throughout Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Through interviewing the victims of these crimes, it was established that the suspect wore a hood, carried a sawn-off shotgun and spoke with a Northern accent. He also wore a watch on his right wrist and was believed to be left-handed. The offender became known as The Fox. He continued to commit a series of break-ins, assaults and robberies in numerous towns including Tring, Cheddington, Leighton Buzzard, Milton Keynes and others. Unfortunately for investigators, Fairley was very good at covering his tracks, and he barely left any evidence behind. However, one particular day, he got sloppy and left an abundance of clues.
In February 1985 he was tried and convicted of numerous counts of burglary, sexual assault and rape and sentenced to six life terms in prison.
Here is some Background on each individual case:
The first person was a 74-year-old woman in Linslade, Leighton Buzzard. He woke her up in the middle of the night, and she resisted so much that he just ran away.
About a month after the first attack he struck a house in Cheddington where he stole a shotgun, cartridges and money while he wore a mask and waited for the homeowner to come home. When he arrived home Fairley tied up the 35-year-old man, watched porn with him, and sexually assaulted the man. After he left he buried the gun and did such a good job burying it that he could not find the gun again. He committed three more burglaries.
In the village known as Tring, he broke into a house where the occupants were not at home. He stole clothes and another shot gun and waited for them to return. He looked through photographs and cut up telephone cords and dressing gown cords for binding. When the homeowners came home he fled and hit another house. The homeowners discovered a hot stove where he had made tea and found they were missing an anorak.
He went to a house in Leighton Buzzard where there was a couple in bed. They woke up to Malcolm standing in their room wearing a mask made from a trouser leg with holes cut to see through. The husband screamed and Malcolm shot him in the hand. Even with the injury the husband ran after him. The fox left behind the anorak and peanuts he stole from the house beforehand.
Later, the fox told police that the scream had surprised him so much that he shot and the shooting scared terrified him to the point that he did not commit any more crimes for a month.
He broke into another house in Linslade during the night and he was armed. It was a married couple once again asleep in bed. At gun point he ordered them out of bed and used their own clothes and shoe laces to tie them up. He sexually assaulted the wife.
Four days later he attacked a family and ordered a wife to tie up her husband. He indecently assaulted her, and when the man protested he hit him with a gun. Then the fox tied the wife up and fled the scene.
He committed another crime in Edlesborough against two young men, ages 17 and 21, and a girl of 18. He tied all three up and put the girl on the bed. He put a pillow on the girls head and raped her. Meanwhile the two boys were on the bedroom floor where he sexually assaulted them. He went off to get a drink and come back to rape her again. Before leaving the house he stole videotapes.
He moved north and stopped in Milton Keynes and committed multiple break-ins.
His next victims were a man and woman who lived in a small hamlet Brampton-en-le-Morthern. As was huge the way they woke up to find a masked man standing there with a gun. He sexually assaulted the woman after putting the gun into the man's face and tying one leg of the man and the woman together. He cut a piece of semen-stained cloth from the bedding to keep evidence from the police.
